Understanding Sensory Issues in Young Children
Article written for Stuff4Autism

Children learn about the world around them by taking in information using their five senses - taste, touch, smell, sight, and sound. Information received is then processed by organizing and interpreting it internally, and then automatically generating a physical response.
Most tasks we complete each day involve multiple senses working together, for example, when jumping rope, a child needs to know where the rope is in relation to his head and feet, how to hold and move the rope in circular motions, and when to jump. What happens when a child is unable to process or interpret information normally taken in through the senses? This is commonly referred to as sensory processing disorder.
